“First, Silence the
Whistle-Blower”
Scathing commentary on the very corrupt Afghan election of
August 20th, 2004. No holds barred as Hitchens calls out the UN and
US as complicit (through negligence) of allowing the Karzai faction to use
money intended to ensure a clean election process to essentially buy votes and
suppress the opposition. Ironically, the one person from the UN or US State
Department brought to task over the entire fiasco was the one person who tried
to sound the alarm, Peter Galbraith. Hitchens is rightfully offended by the
global community’s embraced of an Afghan government that, “contrives to be both
enriched and bankrupt at the same time and makes its own people want to spit.”
Evidently Karzai only voted once:
New Learning: Hitchens calls Karzai’s main rival, “Abdullah
Abdullah (so nice they named him twice).”
New Word: Hazara = Persian speaking Shia Muslims that make
up about 9% of the Afghan population (third largest ethnic group).
