Starting a new group of essay's on the 1988 election.

Election ‘88: Let’s Not Talk About

“Do We Gotta have Hart?”

Leonard’s commentary on the validity of considering a politician’s extra-curricular activities in judging their qualification for office…by way of Gary Hart and Donna Rice. His conclusion: it matters. And, it is very much the right of serious journalists to go there, “I didn’t ask Gary Hart to run for president. He is a philanthropist [first time through I thought he had written philanderer] who gives himself away. We are entitled to look a gift horse in the boxer shorts.”

He goes back to JFK (Hart’s role model?) as an example writing that the Kennedy presidency had “…a contempt for women and other cultures too: style without substance; history as a wet dream. Camelot!”

Great story about Max Lerner (The famous Russian émigré journalist and noted member of Nixon’s enemies list) who was “rumored to have had a fling with Liz Taylor.” Leonard asks a woman in a bar if she would sleep with Max Lerner. Her response is, “well, I’d rather fuck him than read him.

New word: pantheism = a belief that everything composes an all-encompassing god, or, looked at another way, a belief in (or toleration of) all gods.

New learning: Donna Rice, the woman caught on Gary Hart’s lap, once posed in an ad for a bar with “one bare breast and a confederate flag.”
