“Hugo Boss”

Hitchens’ essay on the wackiness of Hugo Chavez…covering everything from his exhuming of Simon Bolivars grave, to his call to god to reanimate Bolivar to his denial of al-Qaeda to his denial of the moon landing. He quotes Chavez from a trip he made to Venezuela with Sean Penn and Douglas Brinkley in 2008, “After all, ‘there is film of the Americans landing on the moon,’ he scoffed. ‘Does that mean the moon shot really happened? In the film, the Yanqui flag is flying straight out. So, is there wind on the moon?’ ”

Hitchens sums it up by saying, “Chávez, in other words, is very close to the climactic moment when he will announce that he is a poached egg and that he requires a very large piece of buttered toast so that he can lie down and take a soothing nap.”

The exhumation of Simon Bolivar:

New learning: The equestrian statue at 6th Ave and Central Park South is Simon Bolivar.

New word: Yanqui = Yankee
