“Is the Euro Doomed?”

Hitchens’ comments on the impact of the Euro on Europeanism. He argues that the main benefit of European union was political and not economic. He goes on to say, “and if the symbol of the second-order dimension [the Euro] becomes tarnished, then the first ideal [political Europeanism] will not escape great damage, either.”

Not much more to say except to quote this interesting passage regarding German feelings about the bailout of the “PIGS” (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain), “Germans. It is openly said in Germany now that it would be better to bring back the deutsche mark than to be bailing out quasi-indigent and thriftless banana republics.”

Funny PIGS comic:

New learning: Esperanto is a “constructed international auxiliary language” created in 1887 as an easy to learn and politically neutral language to foster peace and international understanding…didn’t take.

New word: Comecon = an economic association of European Countries during the Soviet era Comiccon, the comic book convention.
