“The Swastika and the Cedar”

Very interesting essay comparing the “three streets” of Lebanon…the secular and democratic majority, the enclave of Hezbollah loyalists and the upstart fascist group, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party – whose emblem is a swastika.

The opening of the essay is a scary, but somehow comical, recounting of Hitchens violent run-in with the S.S.N.P. in Beirut….definitely worth reading.

New Learning: Beirut’s independent newspaper is called “An-Nahar”  or “The Day”
